Journal Entry: Thu Apr 5, 2012, 3:54 PM

Happy April, Watchers!!

Sooooo it's been about 3 months since I updated the journal and I have quite a bit of progress to add. For starters, I've finished* my Hobbit costume.

*I say "finished" because it's wearable, but there are things I'd like to add. A wig, for starters. It takes about 2 hours to get some curl in my hair and I would love to just be able to pop on a wig and go. Plus, my hair will not be blonde for Dragon*Con. I'll tell you in a minute. I also will add a cloak for the December premiere, and one day I'd like to mold some realistic Hobbit feet, but right now I don't have the skill for that. Here's the finished piece:

I've also made a fair bit of progress on my White Witch chainmail. I want to say it's 2/5ths done. I will be drafting the undercorset pattern soon and have been making a pattern for the crown so I can start sculpting that.

And lastly, I TOTALLY added another costume to my list. Yes, I'm a bad girl. It happened by finding a couple replica items by chance. I have gotten completly obsessed with the Hunger Games. I've had the books for a couple years but never read them. I won them as a prize in the Young Adult Lit costume contest at D*Con with my Alice in '10. I started reading them this winter and couldn't put them down. I've also converted at least 5 people to the series. Cinna, of course, is a favorite since he designs clothes and costumes.

A couple things on this: The first picture is my own design. There is an official website called "CapitolCouture.pn" that has had a contest fr district stylists, and I decided to give it a go. The first is my design inspired by District 4. The results haven't been announced yet. Next, I decided to make Katniss' hunting costume from district 12. A costume we see her in for all of 2 minutes. But, Hot Topic offered a replica of that bow for sale so I snatched it up. Then I chanced across the perfect boots for it. I am still going to make the whole costume, but for now I have just the pants made. I might remake them, too, if I find more accurate fabric.

P.S. Please note! I AM NOT A COSPLAYER!!! People need to understand, that this term 'cosplay' is a relatively new term that started in reference to Anime costumes, and is technically applied to the activity of roleplaying, but people are mistakenly applying this term to the art of costuming. It is not the same thing. Cosplayers who make their own costumes are costumers as well, but my focus is on the art form of costume making, which makes me a COSTUMER. Thank you for your understanding.

Also, I do not do commission work. If I have anything for sale, it will be posted to my journal :)

-STOCK- Please note, my work is not stock art. I have had a few people use my work as such in a taseful manner though. If you want to use my work as stock, please ask permission first. Don't use it in any inappropriate manner, and credit me! The costumes I make are hand-made and took a lot of work. :)

Hi Vera! I have just discovered your Devi and I think you do very beautiful work=]
However, I would like to clarify something. You seem very vehement against being called a cosplayer, and say that you are strictly a costumer.
But the term "cosplay" comes from "costume play" and is most generally defined as the practice of dressing up as a character from books, movies, video games, etc. Which you do.
So, while you may be a costumer, and focus most specifically on the costumes themselves, you do make costumes from movies and you do wear them to conventions. Which does make you a cosplayer.
You are indeed a costumer before a cosplayer, though. And like I have said, I very good one at that.
I do not wish to offend, merely point this out ^_^

I am sorry, but that is not true. The term "play" is also short for "roleplay", which I do not do. I have been doing this a long time, and a lot of us costumers don't like having a new word forced on our hobby that we love! I model the costumes I wear to conventions certainly, but to tell me I'm "playing" simply because it's a fad now really isn't fair. If I prefer to be called a costumer, I just want people to respect that instead of trying to force me to accept this new fad word the kids came up with.

I don't want to offend in exchange either, I'm just trying to provide a new perspective :)

As a devoted cosplayer, I can assure you that no one associates role-playing with true cosplay, at least not these days. Nor is it a fad. It may only have a small following around the world, but it is well-established and there are MANY of us who take it very seriously and give it our all despite being under-appreciated as whole (something I'm sure you, as a costumer, can empathize with). Sure, we may have practiced poses and facial expressions, but those are only meant to enhance the recreation of the character, not serve as any kind of role-playing.
I guess I would just like to give you a fresh perspective on cosplay and show that there are quite a few of us who take our work as seriously as you do your own.

I wouldn't mind talking with you further if you are interested in hearing more=]

Thanks!

That's sad, you need to meet some awesome cosplayers. There are quite a few of us around, we just swim in other circles. And thank you so much! It's also good to see a costumer who doesn't skimp on ANY detail. That's an amazing quality you have.
This is my spam page really. I don't have anything up here. And I don't have much up yet, it all needs to be cropped and the lighting fixed and I'm sooo lazy when it comes to editing haha. I've been working on it, but I've got a con in a week and a half and several costumes to finish so that's been my main concern as of late.
I did just make an account on a new website though. You should check out some of the top rated cosplayers on it. There's some really nifty stuff out there.
My profile is: [link] (only thing I have up is a sort of recent cosplay, though)
You can get to the main page from there.
My real Devi is here too, but I don't have anything on that either (slacker =/): [link]
I found your Devi through your blog actually haha. I'll pop in and out to see what you're working on and let you know if I upload anything new. I will always appreciate concrit!

It was really amazing to get to talk to you. It was great to meet another person willing to bridge the gap between costuming and cosplay. Keep up the good work!

I'm not saying cosplayers aren't devoted, I'm just saying that just because someone wears a costume they made doesn't make them a cosplayer. It's possible to be a cosplayer without making your own costumes, which is why I don't think it's correct to use "costumer" and "cosplayer" interchangably. Also, any random person who choses to don a costume on Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Day of the Dead, Santa Claus, haven't been called cosplayers either. To me, (as well as many members of the costuming community I've discussed this with), cosplay is Anime costuming or roleplay activities. When I get into a costume, it's like Halloween (on crack), and my interest is making a good character picture, but not getting into character.

I think the main reason having the word 'cosplay' forced on me bothers me is because, while I know there are a number of people who call themselves cosplayers who are in fact, dedicated costumers, most of them came into the hobby when this term had become rampant so they consider themselves cosplayers instead of costumers, which is what they are. There is a large percentage of the cosplay community though, that aren't dedicated to accurate costume construction, and cobble together what they can for their larping and whatnot (because apparently, being in costume is starting to become popular), which is why I think calling costumers 'cosplay' really detracts from the amount of work we do. The word itself I just feel isn't very respectful for an artform. I've had a few people question me about this, and while a few got bent out of shape, a few who've been interested in hearing the reason say they now consider themselves costumers instead of costumers. I guess a large part of it depends on whether one got into costuming before or after this word became popular :)

I hope you can understand where I'm coming from, and it's refreshing to have an even-tempered discussion! Really, I just want others to respect the fact that I'm a costumer and to call me so, but I've had a few people get pissy and try and force me to accept their title ;)
